Originating from China in 1900, this antique transitional Peking wool rug employs unique aspects of symmetry and finely drawn characters. Hand knotted in durable wool pile, the mirrored field design depicts heavenly, priest-like figures floating among blue and gold ruyi clouds against a pastel orange background, signifying divinity and wisdom. A unique portrait lacking horizontal borders, the lowermost vertical border depicts a cloud band palace in both the rug’s reflected halves with rolling hills, further signifying heaven and the emperor’s place therein.
