A second-quarter 20th century hooked rug pattern, having a red, blue, and beige checkered field around enlarged sand lozenges containing simple floral sprays within a plain beige outer stripe. From the early 1800s through the middle years of the twentieth century these original compositions allowed the vintage area rug makers an opportunity to freely express their creativity. Rag rugs were originally created out of necessity, with limited supplies and only the simplest tools used to braid and crochet useful floor coverings from scraps of discarded fabric. Nowadays, rag rugs and hooked rugs are not only perceived through the prism of craft but also significant art that has influenced the world's weaving tradition in general. Because of their authenticity and beauty, antique American hooked rugs and rug antique area rugs are keenly sought after.

Lavender Oriental Carpets
As perpetually fashionable as they are collectible, traditional Heriz rugs are skillfully woven in vibrant colors and emphatic geometric designs. Medallion layouts are by far the most common, but the semi-stylized versions of classic all-over Persian patterns are found. Blues range from navy to powder and reds go from tomato to buff. Rug & Kilim
This 9x11 vintage kilim flatweave, handwoven in wool circa 1950–1959, features a rich solid red field framed by a charcoal border. Subtle tonal variation and a restrained design highlight the beauty of traditional flatweaving. On the Design: This kilim embraces restraint through a broad, uninterrupted red field enclosed by a substantial charcoal border. Free of decorative motifs, the design relies on proportion, balance, and color to establish its presence. Fine vertical striations created during the weaving process introduce quiet movement across the field, while the dark border provides a clear architectural frame that defines the design without distraction. The contrast between the saturated red center and the deep charcoal border gives the rug a sense of depth and structure, allowing the natural character of the wool and the craftsmanship of the flatweave to take precedence. Gentle variations in tone and texture lend warmth and authenticity, making the design feel both understated and enduring. The result is a refined interpretation of weaving that suits interiors seeking simplicity grounded in tradition. Condition This vintage kilim enjoys good condition for its age and origin. The accompanying book, New York Interiors by Corynne Pless, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B163) can be acquired independently through our bookstore, here.

Kermn is an ancient city, with an incredible history going back over a thousand years. Marco Polo was one of the first westerners to view Kermn rugs. The city is located in the central south-eastern section, in the province that bears its name. Kermn rugs and carpets are perhaps one of the most recognizable within the antique rug category. A typical pattern for Kermn rugs and carpets is a floral or architectural theme in the main border with a central medallion in the field. Other patterns include the finer Kermn Lavar style with garden, tree-of-life, vase, and all-over mille fleur designs, or the many pictorials which tell the story of a significant figure or event in history. The vase design carpets originated during the Safavieh dynasty, and are among the greatest masterpieces of weaving.

A mid-20th century hooked antique rug, with light beige and brown triangle motif tiles alternating with tiles containing delicate floral motifs within a solid dark brown stripe. Cultures all over the world have always had ways of reusing materials since their production in the past required much more effort, time, and, relatively, money than today. rag rugs and hooked rugs in NYC are paramount examples of traditional recycling. They were (and still are) made from discarded clothes, leftover scraps, or clippings of fabric. Little do we know about the craft before the end of the 18th century. According to Jenni Stuart-Anderson, the author of “rag vintage rug shop making”, these homemade textiles were first brought to Scotland by the Vikings, and later spread throughout the entire country.
