Our Afghan Tabriz rug is a beautiful example of traditional craftsmanship. Originating from the ancient city of Tabriz in northwestern Iran, this rug reflects the rich history and cultural heritage of the region. Tabriz is renowned as the largest producer of handmade Persian wool rugs in the world, and its influence on rug weaving can be traced back to the 15th century. The design of this rug incorporates the distinctive Tabriz style, characterized by its intricate patterns and curvilinear motifs. The background of this rug features a soothing ivory color, while the border adds a touch of warmth with its rust hue. The overall color palette of ivory is complemented by various shades of red, blue, green, and yellow. This rug is made using a blend of wool and cotton, with a wool pile tied in the asymmetric (Persian) knot style. The wool used in this rug is sourced from sheep in the mountainous terrain of the Ghazni Province in Southeast Afghanistan. The natural properties of this high-quality wool, such as its longer staple and oily texture, make it ideal for carpet weaving. The weaving process takes place in the homes of ethnic Turkmen weavers, mostly from the Esari subtribe. The raw wool is hand-carted and spun into carpet yarn, ready for weaving on traditional floor looms. This traditional method of production ensures the durability and authenticity of each rug. To create this rug, the weavers employ double wefting and heavily pack the depressed warp, resulting in a robust and long-lasting weave. The rugs are woven with centuries-old, all-natural dyestuff, adding to their timeless appeal. This particular rug measures 12' x 14'10" and has a knot density of 104 knots per square inch. Based on this density, it is estimated that there are a remarkable 2,645,883 individually hand-tied knots in this rug. Whether used as a centerpiece in a grand living room or as a statement piece in a formal dining area, this Afghan Tabriz rug embodies the charm and elegance of traditional Persian design. Its high-quality construction and rich history make it a unique addition to any home or collection.
