Originating from India in 1920, this antique traditional Samarkand wool rug employs many features remarkably similar to select Khotan rugs from East Turkestan. Hand-knotted in high-quality wool, the all-over field design portrays red and black pomegranates against a blue background; distinguished symbols of fertility and prosperity in many kingdoms, complemented by three tiled borders of highly stylized rams horn motifs representing strength and masculinity. Together, these iconic symbols likely represent regional importance or a divine request to protect the harvest.
