New Wave in Luxury

Designers Deborah Costa and Kristine Renee transformed a vintage fishing boat into a Sausalito live-work retreat for their studio, Jeanne Renee.

In the dining area, pattern sets the tone with a custom upholstered "buffalo check" banquette and throw pillows, nodding to the boat's vintage provenance. The original design also comes through in the refinished teak interior and parquet floors (hidden under brown shag carpet), highlighting the room's earthy palette.

The designers’ passion for pattern is on full display in the bedroom, where a maritime palette finds original expression through a mix of new and vintage floral, patchwork, and leopard textiles – continuing from the pillows and bedding to the upholstered headboard.

For Deborah and Kristine, “home isn’t always where you expect to find it.” As both a place to work and unwind, the boat reflects the designers’ passion for architectural preservation, finely-crafted materials, and luxury layered with a little bit of kitsch.

A corner seating area featuring brown and white checkered upholstery, accented with a variety of decorative throw pillows in mixed patterns including green stripes with a vase motif, floral tapestries, and a botanical print.

Harmony is key when it comes to the designers’ gift for mixing hues and patterns. They chose an olive colorway of checked fabric for the banquette backrest and a coffee colorway of the same fabric for the piping and cushions. A panopoly of pillows featuring Grecian forms and French-inspired foliage, all feature shades of green.

Being on the boat reminds us that luxury isn't about square footage - it's about the experience.

An homage to the city of Sausalito, a vinyl copy of Rumors by Fleetwood Mac (largely recorded there) is featured on the turn table. The album is a prime example of the “relaxed, nostalgic atmosphere” the designers wanted. With its “simpler, more present type of luxury,” the boat exudes the boundless possibilities of great design.
