Porcupines are famous for their quills, which are actually large, stiff hairs that help defend the animals against natural predators. The quills are an agricultural by-product that has long been used as décor items. Each quill lampshade is handmade in Cape Town, South Africa, with individual quills woven onto a frame with copper wire.

The four-light shade pendant by Chapman and Myers was inspired by a vintage mid-century French sconce with a simple metal armature. The minimal cruciform structure of the metal frame is the main feature of the design. The frame outlines and supports the inner cylindrical shade. All of the assembly hardware for installing the inner shade was engineered to be hidden in order to maintain the clean and simple aesthetic of the light.

The Elliot collection, designed by Libby Langdon, is a sleek and almost masculine collection featuring a series of chunky Lucite rods and a polished nickel frame to highlight the shape. The fixture's view from below is as important as what it looks like from the side. The metal work follows the shape of the circular rods creating a scallop pattern. The filtered light bounces between the Lucite rods and gives off a beautiful glow. Architectural in nature, the Elliot is a modern take on a crystal-style wall mount.

A faux alabaster drum shade softens this sophisticated pendant lamp, a part of the Elancourt collection from Jamie Young Design.
