Glass Liuli Sculpture

The vermillion bird represents the element fire, the color vermilion red, the southern direction, and summer. The Shan Hai Jing describes the phoenix as being born on Dan Mountain. Also called the Dan Phoenix. The phoenix also refers to one of exceptional talent and was born in a south-facing valley at the South Pole, and symbolizes talent and lofty aspirations. The vermillion bird is said to bring prosperity, progeny, and peace. Vermilion red is also a celebratory color in traditional Asian culture for weddings and new business openings. This piece is an ingenious juxtaposition of detail and sparseness, color and transparency, space and form. The vermillion bird appears like the blazing sun, distant yet near, forever shining, representing our deepest wishes. The nature of glass transports the light and presents a space for imagination to spark. Associated with the four quadrants of the vault of heaven is the Azure dragon of the East, the Vermillion bird of the South, the white tiger of the West, and the black tortoise of the North; in the center is the Qilin (unicorn). Each region corresponds to one of the five elements: Metal (west), wood (east), water (north), fire (south), and earth (center). Moving across the night sky, the stars connect all life to the five elements. When the universe and elements are aligned, harmony ensues.

This Fengshui-inspired collection draws from millennia-old motifs in classic art to invoke the best within us: Positivity, self-encouragement, and courage. The heavenly harmony of clouds uplifts one to aspire for greatness. These artistic motifs remind us of creating that energy for ourselves in our own space that may elevate our atmosphere and forge a strong relationship with the “Fengshui” or energy of our homes and workplaces. Ascent of the visionary can be looked at as two halves. The upper half features a tiger ascending a mountain to overlook the animals and life below it, overflowing with light. The circular polished center is the focal point of the design. It is like the surface of a clear pool, and also like a magnifying glass that shows two fish’s movements. It seems two fish are swimming together leisurely, and enjoying their respective joy at the same time. From the front view, it’s when you dive into the water and watch fish swim and see everything clearly from the seafloor- the Taihu rock stands up tall, fish swims in between; on the other hand, the polished surface recreates an experience of viewing from atop of the water. These two perspectives were combined into one design, making the artwork more interesting to view. In a nutshell, when appreciating things from different perspectives, we may be able to release ourselves from boundaries or physical limits and reach intellectual freedom. Joyful harmony a majestic mountain, a limpid pool, the heart is limitless. Like a shadow to the form, the sun and moon mirror each other in joyful harmony.

The world is connected in a myriad of intricate ways by the formless dao - a way of existing in the world…like an emotion or a conscious perception. Fish come from oceans, rivers, and ponds to meet upon this hulu gourd. In pursuit of the heart’s dao, people come together and relationships are formed. In China, this is called yuan, a word akin to fate or destiny. Here two fish meet and look toward the same future, in harmony with each other and the times. From the front, the fish appear in delicate relief. From the back, the high-polish and engraved surface implies the presence of deep waters. Front and back together cleverly the internal and external qualities of existence and non-existence.

This design depicts the dragon in natural repose as it winds around to form a taichi and conveys its power. The dragon’s head emerges with a persistent gaze as it safeguards the natural order in a way only it can command. Liuli absorbs and reflects light across varying sculptural depths and polished surfaces to convey the dragon’s internal power. The pine unfurls like a fan, like a fishtail swaying in the water. Emerging from entwined branches, carp and pine exist in beautiful harmony. The design draws from traditional auspicious elements. The pine symbolizes longevity, fish symbolizes prosperity. The artwork presents a visual contrast among the dynamic energy between the fish and profound tranquil pine trees. We join philosophy with auspicious symbols to offer a new form of blessing. Zhuang Zi’s The Butterfly Dream is a philosophical classic that presents a state of neither here nor there, both real and illusory, and is the inspiration behind this design. Has the fish become the pine or has the pine become the fish? Another interesting way to view this piece, is whether the bottom part of the design is a tree trunk in the mountain range or a Taihu rock under the lake? Only the viewer would know and take his or her imagination to fly. Evergreen ProsperityThe stalwart pine need not count the days. Joyous fish need did not yield to distraction. Standing against the blue skyupright and calm, serenity begets longevity, strength begets splendor.

In the spirit of never giving up, the Adherence sculpture is an inventive rendering of two human figures counterbalancing their weight while firmly gripping each other. The pair is sand cast from iron with an old-world finish and fixed to a granite base. Place alone on an accent table or upon a bookcase shelf to add an artistic touch.

Azure Dragon represents the element wood, the eastern direction, the spring season. Superimposed on the dragon is a swirling auspicious Ruyi cloud, representing good luck and prosperity. forming a distinctive contrast with the detailed representation of the dragon itself. The crystal hibiscus flower sculpted here possesses a unique personality. Achieved through the technique of pate-de-verre and twice-firing, this design is one of the most challenging pieces because the petals are large and layered, and each step in the process needs extra effort to secure. For example, in the refining wax form, every micro inch and subtlety plays its own role in the grand scheme of beauty and they require tens of injection points for liuli ingredients for exact color placement. Because the hibiscus flower is one of only a few that bloom in late fall—when many flowers wilt—the Chinese have long since admired the survivor for its conviction. As if guided by the chilling autumn draft, the petals of this flower remain uplifted—fearlessly radiating its colors when all others have faded. And for that, the glass hibiscus flower immortalizes the flower’s beauty, a quality of resilience and courage. View the self through flowers, view the world through a vase. Through the noble hibiscus, we are shown the will of our convictions.

This design features a tiger ascending a mountainous peak, mighty and ferocious. It calls out to the other animals with a roar, announcing its rightful place as king. From raised fur to tongue, the tiger’s power comes through in the sculpture. The sculptural realism connects with the viewer, igniting the tiger within. Under its mighty paws is a ruyi, an ancient Chinese symbol of auspiciousness and hope. The ruyi’s unique and elegant shape is often found in Chinese art. LIULI combines traditional Chinese totems with realism as a blessing for a mighty, prolific, and benevolent new year.

The Beauty of Harmony is small in size, but its diminutive form holds unbounded wisdom. This crystal paperweight continues a LIULI tradition of combining the Taiji symbol (yin-yang symbol) with the head of a dragon. Here, the dragon's body is drawn into a circle to represent the cycle of yin and yang, harmony, peace, and wisdom. Its head is intricately detailed with a tendril motif. The design echoes that of China's "first dragon," a jade artifact from the kingdom of Hongshan. The glimmering amber and subtle coloration yield a powerful, enigmatic effect as only liuli can.

Glass beads have been made for centuries throughout Africa. Using a technique that has been handed down from generation to generation, our makers begin by compressing glass into a dry grain, and heating the grain so that the pieces form together. The recycled glass is rushed into a porcelain cast. The stem of a cassava leaf is used to make the hole. The beads are baked in a furnace causing the glass to melt together and cassava stem to burn, leaving only the grainy textured "sandglass" bead behind. Our makers are members of Ghana's Krobo Tribe in Western Africa. Beads have played an important role in the cultural life of many communities throughout the Continent of Africa, and remain to this day a symbol of wealth and a form of currency.
