George Sellers created Athena by hand carving it from clay; a plaster casting was then sent to Italy for production in ceramic. The original, thought to be from the 4th century BC, is on display at the Louvre in Paris, France. Athena was the Greek goddess of many things: wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, just warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. Minerva is the Roman goddess equivalent of Athena. The Greek city of Athens and the goddess Athena essentially bear the same name. Our goddess is made from terracotta-based ceramic, formulated in a method the Italians refer to, the act of packing a perfectly produced mold with terracotta clay. Once allowed to dry it is pulled away from the mold and transferred to a kiln where it's fired at 950 degrees, then fired for a 2nd time after being glazed in our signature antique white glaze. I absolutely love my Great Horned Owl statue! I mounted it on a stump and put it in my hosta garden and it looks stunning! A word to the wise: I live in a woodland area and originally had my owl displayed toward the back of the lot, against a backdrop of tree trunks and other wood. Because of his color, which is a brown that matches the tree trunks almost entirely, he blended into the background and was hard to see. I moved it up closer and put it in front of a greener background, and now it pops! He has lots of detail and is very realistic looking.
