This is a cute version of a little flying horse, his smiling eyes have formed into two curved lines; he has a plump body, a round butt and a pair of small wings on his back. The little flying horse comes on a cloud, its forehead and body have totems of the peony, meaning auspicious good fortune. The vermillion bird represents the element fire, the color vermilion red, the southern direction, and summer. The Shan Hai Jing describes the phoenix as being born on Dan Mountain. Also called the Dan Phoenix. The phoenix also refers to one of exceptional talent and was born in a south-facing valley at the South Pole, and symbolizes talent and lofty aspirations. The vermillion bird is said to bring prosperity, progeny, and peace. Vermilion red is also a celebratory color in traditional Asian culture for weddings and new business openings. This piece is an ingenious juxtaposition of detail and sparseness, color and transparency, space and form. The vermillion bird appears like the blazing sun, distant yet near, forever shining, representing our deepest wishes. The nature of glass transports the light and presents a space for imagination to spark. Associated with the four quadrants of the vault of heaven is the Azure dragon of the East, the Vermillion bird of the South, the white tiger of the West, and the black tortoise of the North; in the center is the Qilin (unicorn). Each region corresponds to one of the five elements: Metal (west), wood (east), water (north), fire (south), and earth (center). Moving across the night sky, the stars connect all life to the five elements. When the universe and elements are aligned, harmony ensues.

The world is connected in a myriad of intricate ways by the formless dao - a way of existing in the world…like an emotion or a conscious perception. Fish come from oceans, rivers, and ponds to meet upon this hulu gourd. In pursuit of the heart’s dao, people come together and relationships are formed. In China, this is called yuan, a word akin to fate or destiny. Here two fish meet and look toward the same future, in harmony with each other and the times. From the front, the fish appear in delicate relief. From the back, the high-polish and engraved surface implies the presence of deep waters. Front and back together cleverly the internal and external qualities of existence and non-existence.

The Assyrian Horse Sculpture is made from a lost-wax technique where boiling bronze is poured into a mold covering an original wax sculpture that melts away. Once set, there is a very long process of refining the bronze to give it a patina. The Etruscan style and the aged finish of this bronze sculpture make it feel like an antique.

Mighty Roar captures the moment the mighty tiger leaps into the air. Body in motion, the image is encouragement and motivation to propel oneself upward. Guan Gong was a famous general in the Three Kingdoms period (220–280 CE). In light of his bravery, wisdom, and military prowess—all graphically recorded in the Annals of the Three Kingdoms—later emperors awarded him various posthumous titles, including that of duke (gong). He is also widely seen as a model of Confucian virtues, especially benevolence, justice, courtesy, wisdom, faith, loyalty, righteousness, and courage. His many exploits have been handed down and extolled from generation to generation, culminating in his apotheosis during the Sui dynasty (581–618 CE). In Chinese Buddhist temples, he is venerated as the bodhisattva Guan Di, one of the principal protectors of the Dharma. In Daoism, he is venerated as the Guan Sheng Emperor. He is also worshipped as the God of War, and as a tutelary deity of wealth and literature. In this large piece cast in burgundy, Guan Gong is depicted as the heroic God of War, mounted on the famous horse Red Hare. Gripping his glistening half-crescent spear, the “green dragon crescent blade,” the majestic Guan Gong is clad in armor and clutches his beard with his left hand. The vivid depth of detail in his facial expression, armor, and mount lends the entire piece a lifelike appearance. The flowing cloak and flying mane imbue the work with dynamic energy. The base supporting the horse is in a flower-cloud motif. Guan Gong’s gilded spear is made of composite metal and inlaid with zircon, and is held in place by nothing but its own weight. This sculpture is the first image of Guan Gong on horseback produced by LIULI and gives full expression to the awe-inspiring bearing of this celebrated figure of Chinese culture and history.
