A mid-20th century vintage colorful Moroccan rug, Circa: 1960, origin: Morocco. Woven in the 1960s by indigenous Moroccans, these vintage carpets in NYC's distinctive orange color remind of a setting sun’s warm hue, with black patterns on its surface being shadows cast on the sand. The shapes on the area rug‘s top look like small huts, erected by the tribe which woven it, but the meaning of the other depictions is not clear. The long ones might symbolize Hayat Agaci, the Tree of life, which reminds us that even after death, there is hope in the afterlife. The shapes underneath the huts are similar to the Goz, the Eye which is supposed to protect from all evil. Thanks to its short pile, this Moroccan vintage runner rug remains delightfully soft. From versatile flatweaves to shaggy hand-knotted area rugs or runners, Moroccan rugs are both decorative and functional. They are valued for their technical qualities, expert use of fibers, great tensile strength, and abrasion resistance. Without a doubt, the original tribal Moroccan rugs from the Doris Leslie Blau collection bring character and a touch of worldliness to an interior.

Hand-knotted in wool and originating from Morocco circa 1950-1960, this 3x7 vintage Moroccan rug is an extremely rare piece like so few of its provenance. On the Design: Admirers of the craft will note what an exceptional find this Shabby Elegance piece is for any period, especially considering the typically small, narrow looms of many tribal weavers. A notable presence of polychromatic tones underscores a bold, graphic sense of drama and gravity in the boho chic design. This piece enjoys a lush high pile with primitivist Berber diamond medallions and geometric patterns. Keen eyes will further admire its healthy pile—exemplary of tribal rugs from this provenance and their textural appeal. This in tandem with the general attention to detail and sheer personal nature likely connotes a very special piece, and the work of many weavers. It’s a gorgeous work of the primitivist Berber tradition, and an exemplar of all nomadic folk art as well. A gracious carpet with a cultured personality, well suited for a wide array of decor possibilities. Condition: This vintage Moroccan rug further enjoys good condition for its age and origin.

From versatile flatweaves to shaggy hand-knotted area rugs or runners, Moroccan rugs are both decorative and functional. This circa-1940 vintage Moroccan runner antique rug is hand-woven in wool with a traditional shaggy pile and features a geometric design of linear, spider-like shapes in two tones of brown on a natural wool background. Moroccan rugs have typically been woven by tribal peoples for their utility rather than for decoration. These vintage carpets experienced a growth in popularity in the West when mid-century modern designers such as Le Corbusier paired the thick piled Berber vintage rugs with their minimalist furniture. Many of these Berber carpets are woven by the Beni Ourain peoples from the Rif Mountains near the city of Taza in northern Morocco. Colors vary from neutral shades to bright, stand-out hues, with designs ranging from geometric simplicity to free-flowing abstraction. The primitivist feel of many Moroccan carpets makes them attractive to modernist collectors.

Rug & Kilim presents an exceptional vintage Tuareg mat, handwoven with natural reed and camel leather circa 1950-1960. Hand-knotted in wool circa 1910-1920, this 2x4 textile is an antique Balisht piece—a collectible once used by nomadic tribes in their daily life as bags, pillows and more—an exceptional new acquisition in Rug & Kilim's distinguished collection of Central Asian nomadic masterworks. On the Design:A Balisht like this piece was often a traditional ceremonial pillow cover used by Turkmen tribes for special occasions and honored guests, transforming practical household items into displays of tribal wealth and artistic mastery. This enchanting vintage rug from the middle of the 20th century is permeated with the magic of authentic oriental tribal art. It falls into the category of Beni Ourain antique carpets which have been woven by nomadic tribes inhabiting the mighty Rif Mountains near Taza for centuries. Moroccan bath rugs are characterized by simple, almost primitive designs, and a shaggy pile. Here, we are presented with a wonderful compound of diamond-like shapes and ancient kilim motifs, such as earrings expressing a wish to marry, or a tree of life reflecting human hopes for life after death, all executed in a chestnut brown hue against the off-white setting. Beni Ourain rugs have captured the attention of mid-century modernists and until now they remain among one the most sought-after Vintage oriental rugs among designers and tastemakers. One of the factors that makes them so desirable, besides their simplistic yet strangely captivating design, is the soft, long pile that turns any contact with the rug into a heavenly pleasure for the senses. This vintage Moroccan rug, masterfully hand-knotted of the finest wool by old and refined weaving techniques, will certainly not be a disappointment in any department. Its minimalistic elegance and ethnic charm have a chance to enrich any type of interior décor, from classic to contemporary.
