Fish signal abundance in Chinese ornament, and Legend of Asia gives them the full surface of this temple jar: koi turn through waterweed in a hand painted fish motif that circles the body without a clear beginning or end. Made in Jingdezhen, the southern town where porcelain was invented, the porcelain jar is 100 percent hand shaped and taken to high heat, then given a special antique finish so the cobalt reads as softened and settled rather than new. Distress, chips, and a squared body that is never quite true are deliberate marks of the style. At full height it works as entryway decor beside a console, as a floor jar flanking a fireplace, or as a grand counterpart to a tabletop ginger jar in a room built on chinoiserie decor and asian decor.
