The menacing fangs of Rahwana command attention in this mask by Nyoman Subrata. According to the Ramayana epic, Rahwana is the ogre-king of Alengka, mythically situated on the island of Sri Lanka. He kidnaps Sita, the wife of the heroic Rama, only to eventually be killed by Rama and the white monkey army, commanded by Hanoman, the revered white monkey general. Using suar wood as his medium, Subrata passionately conveys Bali's rich Hindu heritage.

What started as an experiment of mixing metal with wood evolved into this stunning collection of furniture and wall pieces. Molten aluminum and brass are carefully poured into reclaimed wood from India. The temperature must be carefully controlled; too hot and the wood burns, too cool and the alloy doesn’t distribute evenly.

Long and elegant, smooth contours convey a sense of achievement. The rich textures of brass repoussé lend an opulent feeling to this mask by Daniel Nyadedzor. The Akan people of Ghana believe such masks bring them success in everything they do. Nyadedzor names the piece Nkosoohene, or "King of Success."

<I>Om,</i> a mantra used in Hinduism and Buddhism, is transformed into a stunning wall relief panel by Balinese artisan Made Mulyani. The face depicts the Sun Jaguar of the underworld seen in an incense burner from the Classic Maya site of Palenque. The mouth makes reference to Chac, the Maya rain god. Covered with skulls, the headdress is an interpretation of the Aztec zompantli, a rack where the heads of sacrificial victims were displayed as an offering to the gods.
