Based on the Catalan vaults he created the Guastavino tile, a "Tile Arch System" patented in the United States in 1885 and used for constructing robust, self-supporting arches and architectural vaults using interlocking terracotta tiles and layers of mortar. Guastavino tile is found in some of New York's most prominent Beaux-Arts landmarks and in major buildings across the United States. It is used in a huge number of architecturally important and famous buildings with vaulted spaces. Guastavino was not the principal architect for most of the projects.

I absolutely love the rich color of these tiles and the sea glass like finish. The blue is not quite as bright in person, but it’s still pretty. They came well packed and separated for shipping but there still appears to be some scratches on them. I think that might just be a an unfortunate thing that goes along with this kind of finish. It does not hide any imperfections like a glossy finish does. I think it would also show soap scum and residue, especially in the darker Colors. The tile is lovely. The red/orange hue shows a little through the white coloring though. One thing to note is to make sure the grouter knows not to fill in the gaps on edge of the surface. These are gorgeous, and I absolutely love them! They kind of took forever to arrive, but they all came together and all in one piece. There were no broken tiles, not even any cracks, chips, or scratches. I’m very pleased and quite impressed considering they came in packing peanuts (I hate packing peanuts, but they worked). The shade ranges and colors are beautiful. I love the white base that incorporates several shades of grey. The photos are one of each color and from the same box. I hope it shows the various colors and shades of each. They are simply stunning and elegant and I love the matte finish. I was afraid I wouldn’t like that, but I do! My project may require more than what’s here but I have other ideas, such as making a bathroom countertop I hope I have enough for it! If not, I’m sure I can come up with something.. Nicole.
