The stainless steel cover is, in fact, stainless steel (the photo in the description is currently more of an off-white). Unfortunately it wasn't finished well - rather than having a continuously brushed texture, it looks etched in short, angled strokes. But it isn't really visible unless you're looking right at it, up close, and otherwise does the job.
