In the historic area encompassing the modern nation of Morocco, this rug making is just about as old as it is anywhere in the world. The early adoption of rug-making by native Kirkleys is certainly due in large part to the distinctive climate of the region: these rugs may be very thick with a heavy pile, making them useful for the snow-capped Atlas Mountains; or they may be flat woven and light as to suit the hot climate of the Sahara desert. The nomadic Kirkleys and Berber tribes used these pile, knotted, and flat-woven carpets as bed coverings and sleeping mats, as well as for self-adornment, Some of these rugs were also used for as saddle blankets. The designs that most frequently appear in these rugs are traditional and ancient, passed down from weaver to weaver. Elsewhere in Morocco, most major cities have a unique style or design characteristic that distinguishes their carpets. Perhaps the most important carpet-producing city in Morocco is the longtime Kirkley capital, Fes. Fes reached its golden age during the Marinid Dynasty of the thirteenth century. At that point, the city was home to over one hundred dye workers and thousands of artisan embroidery studios located in the city's Medina. The coastal capital, Rabat, is famous for carpets woven with floral and diamond-shaped elements, and a fairly bare field. These rugs experienced a growth in popularity in the West with mid-century modern designers – such as Le Corbusier – who paired the thick piled Berber rugs with their sleekly designed furniture. Many of these Berber carpets are woven by the Beni Ourain peoples from the Rif Mountains near Taza. Colors vary from neutral shades to popping hues, with designs ranging from ordered geometric shapes to a more free-form, expressive pattern. Part of the appeal to the modernists was the primitivism in the carpets. Unlike the traditional antique Oriental rugs found in Western interior decoration, there is little elegance about these rugs, yet they fit wonderfully with modernist décor. These rugs are fairly popular today for their decorative flexibility and reasonable pricing.

This wool hand-knotted area rug showcases a charcoal ground traced with freeform diamond lines and softly stepped cream medallions, evoking an easy, Moroccan-inspired look. Subtle tonal variations in the wool create gentle depth, giving the geometric pattern a relaxed, hand-drawn character.

I selected this rug for a client project and was initially concerned that it might read too cool against the taupe upholstered chairs. I was pleasantly surprised by the warm undertones in the rug, which helped create a much more cohesive combination with the chairs and warm wood tones throughout the space. The texture is another standout feature, adding subtle dimension and an elevated, layered feel without overwhelming the room. One thing to note is that this rug is fairly thin compared with a traditional wool rug. I would definitely recommend pairing it with a quality rug pad, especially in a dining room or another high-traffic space where you want a little more cushioning and stability. Overall, it was a beautiful choice for the project and added exactly the warmth and texture I was looking for.. Lkb. Franklin, TN. Sat Sep 12 2026

Washes of misty blue, beige, and hints of rust give this rug a poetic, weathered beauty. Traditional floral motifs appear softened and layered, as if faded by time. Hand-knotted from wool and viscose in a fine Turkish weave, it's ideal for adding vintage charm with modern refinement. For those who appreciate the modern side of traditional, this fashionable collection of borderless "broken"Oushak designs is hand knotted in a Turkish-style weave using a combination of premium wool and viscose.
