Rug & Kilim
Hand-woven in wool circa 1950-1960, this 5x5 square vintage Peruvian Kilim—traditionally known as a Frazada—is a luminous example of South American textile artistry. A distinctive addition to Rug & Kilim's curation, this piece captures the vibrant, sun-drenched spirit of the Andes, where ancient utility meets a surprisingly modern, minimalist aesthetic. On the Design:A striking blend of folk art charm and geometric symbolism, this vintage Frazada features a vertical-striped field rendered in a warm, "harvest" palette of golden ochre, pumpkin orange, and earthy terracotta, beautifully balanced by soft pink and grey bands. Historically, these textiles were woven by Aymara or Quechua artisans on narrow backstrap looms; the two resulting panels were then joined by a central hand-stitched seam, accented here by a playful, multicolored "rainbow" stitch. Dotted across the stripes are delicate, hand-woven diamond motifs—historically significant symbols representing the celestial bodies and the protection of the natural world. The design's unfiltered expression and saturated colorway reflect the soul of Highland life, where such textiles served as both essential protective blankets and bold cultural markers. The rhythmic repetition of the vertical bands is softened by a beautiful, natural abrash, showcasing the organic variations of the hand-spun wool and the weaver's intuitive approach to the dye. This piece is a statement of character and wild elegance—perfect for interiors seeking an infusion of global narrative, warmth, and texture.Condition:This vintage Peruvian Kilim further enjoys good condition for its age and origin.

Gabbeh rugs are made by the nomadic Qashqai tribes of southern Iran. They are rough cut and long piled rugs of rich color and best quality wool. They are sometimes referred to by the heritage of the specific tribe by which they are woven, such as “a Lori rug,” or by the name of the city in which they are most often traded, such as “a Shiraz rug” or “a Shiraz Gabbeh.” The word “Gabbeh” literally translates to “in the rough,” and it is an accurate description of this style of Persian rug. Gabbeh carpets are woven on makeshift ground looms constructed both of materials that are kept and hauled for long distances by the nomadic tribel, and also of materials that are found at each site where the tribe sets up camp. Due to the fact that part of the loom must be found at each site, a wide variety is introduced. Thus, these rugs are usually somewhat irregular in shape. But, for what they lack in perfectly uniform shape they more than make up for in character, durability and uniqueness.

A colorful Paul Klee artist rug made in the Netherlands, Circa date: mid-20th century. This colorful Scandinavian mid 20th century rug by artist Paul Klee embodies contemporary artistic design at its best. Paul Klee was a Swiss German artist with a highly individualized style that was influenced by cubism, expressionism, and surrealism. He taught at the iconic Bauhaus School of Art and his art work helped to shape the modern as well as the postmodern artistic movements.

This 6x6 vintage square rug, hand-knotted in wool and originating circa 1950-1960, represents an extraordinary acquisition documenting mid-century artistic experimentation at its most audacious. On the Design: This masterwork shatters every convention of classical carpet design through explosive abstract design that speaks the visual language of Kandinsky and Miró translated into design. The field abandons traditional hierarchical organization for all-over abstract expressionist vocabulary where organic forms, geometric fragments, and biomorphic shapes collide in chromatic celebration. The design achieves remarkable spatial complexity through overlapping planes of color—lavender, coral, golden amber, sage, navy—each hue maintaining distinct identity while participating in a larger symphonic whole. Curvilinear elements flow across the surface with gestural freedom while geometric patterns create rhythmic counterpoint, demonstrating the weaver's sophisticated understanding of abstract compositional principles.Bold black linear accents define forms and create dramatic contrast that enhances the overall visual energy. These calligraphic elements suggest miniature painting traditions reinterpreted through modernist sensibilities, creating a bridge between cultural heritage and contemporary innovation. For the sophisticated collector seeking pieces that challenge rather than confirm expectations, this represents the ultimate expression of weaving's modernist moment—an authenticated example from a brief revolutionary period that fundamentally expanded understanding of what carpets could express through ancient techniques applied to avant-garde vision.Condition: This vintage square rug is in good condition for its age and origin.

Handwoven in wool circa 1950–1960, this 5x5 vintage Kilim, woven in the tradition of a Frazada textile, is a lively expression of mid-century flatweave craftsmanship. A distinctive addition to Rug & Kilim's curation, the piece captures a vibrant interplay of color and texture, where utilitarian weaving traditions meet an elevated, almost painterly sensibility. This piece enjoys a richly variegated striped composition, defined by vertical bands of alternating width and texture. A vivid polychromatic palette, featuring tones of crimson, magenta, coral, sage green, ivory, and deep brown, creates a dynamic yet harmonious field, where each stripe contributes to a layered visual rhythm. The interplay of color is further enhanced by subtle shifts in weave density and pattern, with certain bands displaying a more intricate, speckled texture while others remain grounded and solid. These variations lend depth and movement to the composition, reflecting the weaver's intuitive approach to both color and structure. Rather than relying on overt geometric motifs, the design draws its strength from repetition and variation within the stripe format, offering a more understated, modernist interpretation of traditional textile language. Natural abrash throughout enriches the palette, revealing gentle tonal changes that animate the surface. The result is a composition that feels both spontaneous and balanced, imbued with the warmth, individuality, and quiet irregularity characteristic of handwoven works. Versatile in its presentation, this piece lends itself beautifully as a wall hanging or an expressive accent on the floor. This captivating mid century modern rug features a powerful and dynamic design. The clockwise swirl of yellow are set against a complex pattern of eccentric swaths of color. The prominence of the large clockwise swirl of yellow gives this Swedish carpet an intriguing dynamic artistic impact, wherein the more solid swirls of color seem to be locked in a dance with the rest of the carpet. In between the circuitous looping of the yellow is the rest of the carpet, which has been rendered into a similar shapes by virtue of the round format of the piece. Within this motley colored and complex swirl shapes of green, brick, brown and ivory joust with one another for prominence, with the ensuing struggle lending the carpet much of its unique beauty. An intriguing work of art that is certainly unique among vintage Scandinavian carpets, this mid century modern area rug is an exciting and dynamic example.
