Handwoven in pure hemp originating circa 1950-1959, this 5x9 vintage Turkish kilim rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Kilim & Flat Weave collection. It features a minimalist layout of fragmented charcoal stripes across a luminous cream ground, celebrating the raw, earthy beauty of un-dyed Anatolian hemp and the authentic panel-woven construction of village textiles.
On the Design:
Among the most authentic domestic textiles of Anatolia, mid-century Turkish panel kilims are revered for their spatial ingenuity, raw material beauty, and deeply practical origins. Woven by village women across rural Turkey, these flatweaves depart from the intricate motifs of urban workshop carpets in favor of austere, utilitarian minimalism. Because traditional domestic looms were narrow to accommodate modest living quarters, weavers crafted long flatweave stripe designs using durable, hand-spun hemp fibers that are traditionally favored for grain sacks and agricultural textiles.
The present 1950s example is particularly notable for its extreme restraint, architectural simplicity, and the remarkably tactile, slubby texture inherent to natural hemp. Against an expansive, cream field, spontaneous, fragmented horizontal bands of charcoal emerge and disappear, resembling textural brushstrokes rather than rigid geometric stripes. The subtle, organic offsets where the hand-loomed textile artistry meet transform these quiet linear accents into a vibrating, minimalist grid. Woven in a classic plain tapestry technique, the rug celebrates true Anatolian village craftsmanship while preserving a quietly sophisticated visual language.
