Hand-knotted in wool, this 4x6 Vintage Turkish Anatolian Prayer Rug, circa 1950–1959, features a deep blue mihrab framed by richly detailed floral borders in a vibrant polychromatic palette. A refined example of Anatolian devotional weaving.
On the Design:
The design centers on a striking deep blue mihrab, whose elongated architectural niche creates a dramatic sense of depth against the richly ornamented field below. Dense floral motifs and geometric detailing fill the lower register with remarkable intricacy, while the carefully proportioned niche preserves the clarity and spiritual focus characteristic of Anatolian prayer rugs. The restrained balance between open space and ornament lends the design both visual richness and quiet dignity.
Surrounding the field is an exceptionally layered border arrangement that demonstrates the sophistication of mid-century Turkish village weaving. Multiple guard borders frame a vibrant principal border animated by stylized blossoms, geometric rosettes, and finely articulated vinework in warm reds, ivory, olive, soft gold, and deep indigo. The lively polychromatic palette enhances the rug's architectural design while celebrating the enduring craftsmanship and decorative language that have long defined Anatolian devotional textiles.
