A finely handwoven Spanish tapestry from the 19th century, this 9x9 antique piece reflects the enduring influence of Rococo design in European decorative arts. The composition captures a sense of symmetry and softness, balancing ornamental structure with painterly floral detail. Its square format and tapestry construction lend it a versatile character—equally suited as a statement rug or a wall-hanging textile. On the Design:The composition unfolds around a central floral cartouche, where a delicately rendered bouquet rests within a stylized vase. This focal point is framed by an ornate rocaille medallion, defined by scrolling, asymmetrical curves that evoke the fluidity of 18th-century design traditions carried into later European weaving. A soft sky-blue field surrounds the medallion, offering a gentle contrast to the warmer tones of coral, terracotta, and gold that animate the border and inner framework. The interplay of these tones lends the piece a luminous quality, with subtle abrashed variation that speaks to its age and handwoven character.Corner spandrels mirror the central theme with smaller floral arrangements, reinforcing the symmetry while allowing the eye to travel naturally across the composition. The border, rich in movement, features layered scrollwork and floral detailing that frame the field with a sense of architectural elegance. Overall, the design reflects a tapestry sensibility, more painterly than geometric—where motifs feel composed rather than repeated, and each element contributes to a cohesive decorative narrative.Condition:This antique Spanish tapestry is in good condition for its age and origin – ideally intended for use in wall-hanging projects.
