This 10x13 antique Agra rug is an extremely rare and exciting new addition to Rug & Kilim’s collection of rugs—hand-knotted in wool and believed to originate in the second half of the 19th century. On the Design: Teal blue and beige tones underscore an elaborate all over pattern, with a notable black inner border and rich burgundy accents punctuating both field and border alike. Admirers of the craft may especially appreciate this rug’s notable inspiration from Islamic texts of Mamluk Egypt. The entire design itself looks to adapt the imagery of a Qu’ran in this style, wherein the many intricate borders, cartouches and floral patterns resemble those of a traditional frontispiece in this provenance. Keen eyes will further admire an inscription of the words ”yasmuhu illah”—loosely meaning “God allows'' though the full except it draws on in the Qu’ran would read “touched by none except angels.” Altogether it’s a piece as deeply personal in its subtext as it is in the details and beauties that distinguish it in our craft—both a masterpiece and a true collector’s rug, teeming with history and culture.Condition:This antique rug further enjoys good condition for its age and origin, with minimal wear following minor restorations.
