• The first element that stands out about this rug is its design. Many of the Turkish rugs with which we are familiar mimic the formal court carpets of the Ottoman Empire. This antique Ghiordes rug uses a motif in the border that is found throughout Turkey, but the design in the field seems to have a more primitive, organic quality that makes this piece stand out. • This antique rug was created with the Ghiordes knot, which is often found in the territory that was a part of the Ottoman Empire at the time this tribal Ghiordes rug was created. This knot is different from the Senneh, or Persian, knot in that it wraps around two warp threads symmetrically instead of one. This creates a stronger carpet, but it also takes almost twice as long to weave. This is a small piece, but a lot of care and effort went into creating it.
