Tracing the curvaceous path of an interplanetary body, orbit threatens to undermine everything we thought we knew about astrophysics. Miguel Herranz, a designer who walks among us, has tapped into the strange, elliptical trajectory, releasing waves of unadulterated exquisiteness and elegance. We can but hope the space-time continuum is capable of containing such bliss.
Starting off with the positive, these light are positively beautiful and very unique. I spent a long time looking for something that fit our decor, and these were perfect. The way they glow through the thin veneer and show through the wood grain is breathtaking at night. As far as the negatives go, I feel these were rather expensive for what they actually are very thin veneer wrapped around a light fixture. The veneer is so thin that you do have to take caution when handling them, otherwise they can break and snap. Also, the light fixture inside the shade is visible from lower viewing angles, which leaves exposed a black cord and chrome base for the bulb. If they could have incorporated some design element like a sheath on the inside of the shade to hide the internals, I would habe given this 5 stars, but as it stands now, it does distract from the lights beauty a bit, and for this price Id expect better. I ordered the cherry wood, and its actual color was slightly lighter and more reddish than the render online. Not a negative, just an FYI.. Brook. Madison, WI. Sun Sep 27 2020

Riflesso is one of Vistosi’s most iconic lamp collections. In the latter variant the recent restyling by designers Chiaramonte & Marin allows a better diffusion of light. The three sinuous shapes of Riflesso, which are reminiscent of soap bubbles and make lightness and transparency their hallmark, now feature a dual light source. The LED is positioned at the top, where the gold or satin-finished copper structure joins the glass, and at the bottom, at the end of the second structure. Whatever the colour (crystal, pink, amber or smoked), the glass is almost invisible and becomes a simple tool for propagating light. This result is possible thanks to the experience of Vistosi’s master glassmakers who, with skill and craftsmanship, make this precious raw material visible only through the reflection of light, enhancing the concept of simplicity and lightness from which the collection’s concept originates. In Riflesso, therefore, glass becomes light, functionality merges with design, and the ultimate purpose of a lamp is never lost sight of: to illuminate, but at the same time to furnish the environment harmoniously. Hence the careful study of dimensions, which allow Riflesso to adapt to different needs, spaces and contexts, from homes to offices. The double LED source and the greater light diffusion allow the lamp to be used individually even in more spacious environments.

“Looking to the past to design the present with ideas that look to the future”: this is the design philosophy of architect Francesco Lucchese, who designed the Armonia collection for Vistosi, which was awarded the honourable mention of the Compasso D’Oro in 2020. When designing, Lucchese allows himself be inspired by history to identify future trends and needs, in seeking to bring out the maximum functionality of each object and offer new emotion. Colour also has great importance in his creative process, as shown by the Armonia chandeliers and wall lights, which combine warm and cold colours (crystal and amber, smoke and amber) or the extreme transparency of pure crystal cylinders, with two different metal finishes of the external ring that surrounds them: satin black nickel and internal satin brass or copper. It creates plays on circumferences that create infinite circles. The Armonia collection is enhanced with a new large-sized chandelier, a sublime example of Vistosi’s artisanal know-how, and four new appliques with a frame without a metal ring, which highlights the cylinders in crystal with different colours and processing techniques (E14 light). The historical reference is found in the techniques used for processing the glass: the balloton, which gives the glass surface a particular crossed relief that creates a special optical effect, the “rigadin”, the traditional striped design, both straight and twisted, which in the past decorated the surfaces of Murano glass furnishings to obtain interesting refractions of light, and the new elongated diamond pattern. The combination of colours and the technical details make the light diffused by Armonia truly enveloping, both in its suspension and wall versions.

With its thoughtful air, the ovalesque Orbit light will decorate any wall with quiet self-assurance. Created by Spanish designer Miguel Herranz, Orbit is an unfussy lamp whose shape is handmade by twisting a piece of wood veneer. Two designs are feasible, depending on the direction of torsion—that is how the wood veneer is twisted. Light from the Orbit is diffused both upwards and downwards via its two apertures and an inner glow radiates outwards, accentuating the beauty of the timber veneer grain. In essence, just as the earth is in orbit around the sun, light is in orbit around the Orbit.

Imagine a crisp clear mountain stream running over a bed of pebbles. Listen to the sounds. Kneel at the stream's edge. Put your hand into the flow and pick up one of the pebbles. Feel how smooth it is. Look at the shape, rounded by the water. This is the trickling vision inspired by the Guijarros by the brilliant Marivi Calvo. Now imagine the Guijarros shining on your ceiling or wall. Dare to dream of stone and water.

Glassmaking is an ancient art that tells of centuries-old knowledge, handed down from generation to generation by the love and passion of expert craftsmen who carefully hold a tradition of excellence. True icons of timeless beauty are born when know-how and craftsmanship meet design, to form a perfect synthesis of tradition and innovation. This is the case of the Giogali and Minigiogali collections designed by Angelo Mangiarotti in 1967 for Vistosi, the lighting brand that has brought glass to perfection. The Giogali lamp (Compasso d’Oro mention in 1969) introduced a new concept in the use of glass: a modular lighting system based on a single hand-crafted crystal element (a type of hook) that can be repeated indefinitely to give life to structures that appear like cascades of light. The hook is the basic module that constitutes the entire architecture of the Giogali system (name that derives from the Venetian “giongher”, or the strap used in the countryside to tie the cart to the yoke), Mangiarotti’s modern interpretation of the Venetian chandelier. Long-term research based on the innovation of traditional shapes generated the hook, which thus becomes the constructive element of the chandelier itself. The basic element can be hooked in a series to form crystal chains, which in turn can be combined to create unlimited formal designs, such as chandeliers of any size that become scenographic backdrop of rooms. Following a restyling of the product, Vistosi introduced the Giogali 3D version in 2005: a new type of hook in glass that allows it to be paired to rings in all four directions, so as to form a continuous mesh that allows great installation flexibility.

The Puppet collection by Vistosi expresses passion and artisan know-how. The undisputed focus is blown glass that is irregularly striped, an ancient manufacturing technique that has been known since Roman times and used for the manufacturing of Murano glass. Here, new magical forms come to life from the breath of master glassmakers. For Puppet, Romani Saccani Architetti Associati, former designer of the Diadema collection, has chosen the sphere, a symbol of perfection and union, a movement that has no beginning or end that remains immutable over time – much like the Puppet collection, which has become an icon of the Vistosi catalogue since its conception. The expressive research of Romani Saccani Architetti Associati is aimed at defining a strong, identifying sign that is conceptually simple, and therefore easily understandable. The result is a collection with a pure, immediate design, devoid of unnecessary frills. The latter allows diffusers to be fixed to the ceiling with steel cables as desired, creating ever-changing plays on light with the electric fabric cables that recall the wires that moved ancient puppets. The diffusers are available in four glass finishes with the possibility of mixing them together. The Puppet Ring collection, created in 2019, plays with spheres of different sizes, differing from the “classic” version for the use of a frame made up of rings of different sizes, single or juxtaposed, which form the base on which the precious glass spheres rest and blend with the structure with the shape blown into the glass itself. Three new configurations were added to the three suspensions already present: given their size, they are particularly suitable for large-scale environments. In the applique, a ring supports a larger sphere facing the ceiling and a smaller one facing the floor.

Tread, Vistosi’s collection of lamps with a vintage soul and industrial style, is enriched with a new diffuser for the suspended version, again designed by the creative duo Chiaramonte & Marin. If the previous diffuser was reminiscent of an old oil lamp, taking us back to the Sixties, the new one does not lose its vintage inspiration, but is transformed and changes style: the blown glass with its characteristic lateral grooves, from which the name of the collection itself derives (from the English word thread), disappears and makes way for a smooth glass, with a decidedly larger diameter and whose shape recalls that of a suction cup. A new solution that makes it possible to illuminate small living areas even with just one element, containing costs, but without giving up a precious glass and a design element, able to characterise and enhance the environment in which it is inserted. Whatever the colour of the glass, the colour of the light does not change because the base of the diffuser is open; the different shades only influence the intensity of the illumination, making it more or less warm.

"The idea came to me while walking around La Escala, I noticed one of those typical industrial-looking wall lamps with the bulb visible and protected with transparent glass. Not that it was a novelty or a discovery, I would say that we all have it in mind and that it is as old as incandescent bulbs; simple shapes, shapes that comfort us, shapes that are familiar to us and that make us travel through time," says Christophe Mathieu
