Many of the lighting pieces in the Sherman House were made of wood and, consequently, employ components that are larger in diameter. These pieces mimic the texture created by thicker wood components even though they are done in brass.

The apparently random juxtaposition (hence the name "Mikado") in fact follows a precise and balanced scheme.
