A wonderful low chest adapted from a Katana Tansu original from the late 17th century. A katana is a Japanese samurai sword and a tansu is a storage chest for the long saber styled swords. Our modernized design has authentic corner brackets called herikanagu and a rectangular oak top over two ample drawers mounted with sturdy brass bar pulls over a metal base with tapered corner posts. Furniture and upholstery appearances can vary and are not guaranteed due to the inherent variation of all natural materials, including wood color, wood grain, leather, and stone material and finish. Artist Commentary: In "The Playa II" the space is flattened and depth is suggested by the stacking of three different planes. At the bottom we see the beach with all its activity... figures, towels, beach chair, the ice cream vendor interact with each other activating the space. Just above with a suggestion of being further away we see the ocean with an array of blue to creating a visual play of shallow and deep. Dividing the field of blue a barrier rope with white egg shaped floaters divides the space in a playful way. Lastly the top layer represents the furthest scene where we see palms, beach and more water suggesting a peninsula that separates the two water masses. Bathed with light the space is further moved by the long shadows of the palm trees.

Some of these houses sit along side the mangroves, blending into the scenery providing an insider's view to nature. The natural beauty is interrupted at bottom center by a small table with a book of matches and a "cobra" which is a local favorite when warding away mosquitoes. The artist plays with the idea of forcing solitude by repelling those who can ruin a good time.
