Originally designed in 1945 for Gino of Capri restaurant, affectionately known as “Gino’s” by New Yorkers, Scalamandré restored the Zebras wallcovering at this iconic Upper East Side establishment in 1973 after the walls were damaged by fire. Flora Scalamandré, wife of Franco Scalamandré, skillfully hand-drew the signature motif, which would later become the renowned Scalamandré Zebras design. This lively pattern depicts two Zebras prancing around politely placed arrows set against a lively colored ground. The playful and captivating design instantly captivated audiences, quickly joining the product line and ultimately achieving fame through appearances in notable films such as Wes Anderson’s “The Royal Tenenbaums”.

Based on an archival English textile painting, this lovely chinoiserie print of flowers, branching pine trees, and exotic water birds have a timeless and classic look. This elegant wallcovering coordinates with the linen print of the same name and is printed on ivory sisal grasscloth grounds, blending texture and pattern to make a decorative statement in a traditional interior.

We've used the original screens and given it an update with fresh new colorations against crisp white grounds. The charming scenic design is adapted from antique Chinese hand painted scenic wall panels, reinterpreted in a simple and graphic style.

Olof is a braided branch of bowing Rudbeckior that sets a friendly atmosphere in the room. The flower was cultivated as early as the 17th century by the botanist Olof Rudbeck (the elderly), which also got to name both the flower and our pattern.

The Milanese Armor that inspired our Milan Diamond Grasscloth and Appliqué Tape is a unique example of Italian armor made with German influences. Created around 1510, this rare example with fluted surfaces in German fashion is etched with Christian symbolism and references to the Bible, including images of the Virgin and Child and saints Paul and George as well as Latin inscriptions. The armor is adorned with richly gilt ornamentation that we’ve emulated in our products, which will add charm to any room they’re featured in. This wallcovering is made of laser-cut metallic cork appliquéd on grasscloth. The mix of materials in this textile creates an interesting texture that is both eye-catching and understated. Joanna Fret is digitally printed on a non-woven paper ground and entails a classic geometric trellis design with a drop shadow. Derived from the French term "treillage," this refined pattern traces its roots to the 12th century, when a metal trellis motif served as a technique for cultivating grape vines in gardens. Joanna Fret is available in fresh colorways, allowing for versatility in a multitude of projects. A timeless and chic design, Joanna Fret lends itself perfectly to spaces like hallways or bathrooms.

This graceful chinoiserie print was discovered in a small room in the Noble Hardee Mansion in Savannah, Georgia, which has been described as “the last unrestored grand mansion in Savannah”. The house dates back to 1860, and the aged hand-printed paper is thought to have been installed by a decorator who owned the house in the 1960s or 1970s. The paper has widely been attributed to Scalamandré, and it became a mission of ours to bring it back to life, as wallcovering with a matching cotton chintz fabric. It was photographed in sections on-site, redrawn line for line, and matched for its original color of white and grey leaves against an espresso ground. The grandly scaled, nearly four-foot repeat and classic bamboo foliage speak to its adaptation from antique hand-painted Chinese silk wall panels, interpreted in a loose brushstroke style that is typical of more contemporary handprints. New color additions such as Jade and Ciel add a fresh look to this timeless design. Now printed on a 54" nonwoven ground, this mural-like paper features crisp printing, deeply saturated color, and easily paste–wall installation.

A fan-favorite archival Scalamandré motif is reimagined as a durable, vinyl Type II contract-grade ground, perfect for wrapping bathrooms or child spaces in a playful sea turtle scene.

Based on an early 18th-century French document, Chinoise Exotique is a grand design depicting Chinese figures hunting exotic Indian animals. This pattern is a classic example of the kinds of chinoiserie patterns developed for export to the European market in the early 1700s. These fabrics became so popular that France passed a law banning them from sale out of fear that they would collapse the French textile market.

A large illusion motif featuring a selection of ceramics and pottery typical to the work of Jean Cocteau. Scalamandré’s “Lucca” print, an adaptation of an antique hand block printed damask, is interpreted in a dramatic 54” wide printed non-woven wallcovering, which matches the fabric of the same name. The simple floral and acanthus leaf motifs give this design a graphic look. It is printed in a primarily bold palette, which is softened by the subtle texture and color variation that is typical of a hand block pattern.
