The masks are thought to give their wearers spirit powers, depicting an intricate fusion of human and animal features to create unique and decorative sculptural wares. The group has traded their techniques with neighboring tribes for years, thus, many Guro masks share traits with their neighbors, the Baule, and you people.

iNdokutsu/i is the Ewe name for the Sun. Inspired by that mighty star, Ghana's Evelyn Kafui Ahianyo designs a sese wood mask with a traditional pattern. In a palette of black, brown and yellow tones, this decorative item has a round shape featuring a mystic face.

This mask of noble visage was often used by Ethiopian Chiefs to symbolize their authority. Sefah Mohammed replicates the mask with astute artistry as he carves it by hand from local sese wood. He paints and decorates it with clay and embossed aluminum plates, loyally adhering to the unique artistry of Ethiopia's Gauta people, whose name literally means "garden eggs."

Carved by hand from native sese wood, this handsome African mask is an original design by Awudu Saaed. The regal personage is adorned with colorful seed beads and is named <i>Asafoatse</i> – 'a sub-chief' in the Ga language.

A mask of mystical allure, it is traditionally worn by the Lega sorcerer from Congo-Kinshasa (formerly Zaire). According to Lega customs, the sorcerer wears this mask with the sole purpose of healing, consulting the oracle or for initiation rites. Salihu Ibrahim carves the sese wood mask by hand in an oval with a concave heart-shaped face. He paints the piece an off-white shade and treats the mask to appear like an antique piece.

"If she does not return the mask, it means the proposal as been accepted." Named Shawa – Hausa for "Lover's Beauty" – the mask is rubbed with white clay for an aged effect.
