Helps trap the odours from vacuuming in the carbon filter. I also like the fact that they have not added an unnecessary synthetic fragrance to their filter like many other brands as I am sensitive to fragrances. The carbon filter on its own does its job. Useful to have an indicator when to replace - I usually find it lasts a year in our house with moderate usage.
