A hand lathe-turned ebony wood vessel. This collection features our Petanu range. It has an hourglass shape with a hand-carved textured band. Each piece is a labor of love. It begins as raw ebony hardwood and is expertly turned on a lathe by skilled Mozambican artisans, every ridge and detail shaped entirely by hand — a true masterpiece that brings the beauty of African craftsmanship into your home. The lidded design is perfect for storing small items — jewelry and other small accessories — and customers love using these vessels as keepsake urns for ashes. Artisans living in Mozambique's vast woodlands shape each vessel from Mpingo, the Kiswahili name for African blackwood. Differences in tone and slight imperfections confirm the authenticity of the materials and craftsmanship. The wood is always sustainably and ethically sourced in accordance with sustainable practices.
