The Michael Aram Pomegranate collection takes its inspiration from one of the most universal and ancient symbols in the world. The fruit has been prized across the globe, across cultures, and across time as a representation of life, rebirth, and renewal as well as fertility and union. I grew up around Pomegranate-from their use as natural dyes on the antique rugs I used to crawl on as a baby to an integral ingredient in the food that I love. When I'm at my home in New Delhi, I wake each morning to the taste of fresh-squeezed Pomegranate juice. The color, the smell, and the delicate flavor all make it feel like a magical elixir to me.

Chanukah was over for this season before I placed my order, so I have not used my menorah yet. However, I did take it out of the box and found that it is as beautiful as its picture suggested. There is such power in narrative images for me. There is a feeling that we're creating an entire imaginary world, building designs around interactive themes that are familiar to all of us. The shapes are obvious and immediate and, at the same time, the impressionistic and lyrical way a small child might imagine the scenes in a story he's being told. The image of the Tree of Life is one of my favorites. It is an idea that is so widely expressed in all cultures and by all religions that it becomes a universal symbol of hope.

Michael's fascination with a particular type of ginkgo tree, the Ginkgo Biloba, or "Butterfly Ginkgo," which grows with a double leaf reminiscent of a butterfly's wings, gave rise to a fantasia image of the plant. Executed at the highest level of handcraftsmanship, each piece is rendered in solid brass with hand-etched cocoon-shaped vessels. Together, they are strong, but also I would argue, more beautiful. When lines are repeated, or wires are woven, there is a loveliness to the pattern that fascinates and pleases. Asymmetry is created that is calming and classical. "I often explore materials and create collections that are craft-based. The Twist was created while experimenting with intertwining wires. There is a fluidity and movement to the twists that I love. The twisted wires suggest a coming together of things that I find poetic."

Regardless of the faith with which they are connected, they are imbued with profound energy and meaning that holds a very special place for Michael Aram. "This is such a fun object! It suggests its function through its form. A matzah, matzah plate...I do that a lot and it always strikes me with such a sense of whimsy and surprise. The surface texture of the matzah, when it is interpreted in cast metal, also creates an unexpected beauty. I love that it comes with a bag for hiding so it creates a ritual for kids and a special memory of family events."
