Maria gets a new look. For the first time in its more than 100-year history, Rosenthal's successful collection is now available in a contemporary version called "Maria en Vogue" with colored glazes. The delicate pastel colors emphasize the romantic vintage touch of the shape. The triumph of the "Maria" shape began in 1916. The service was named after the wife of the company founder Philipp Rosenthal, who married 35-year-younger Maria in 1916. "Maria" stands for porcelain history and table culture. Presumably created as a replica of a silver tea service, this polygonal dinnerware shape with the characteristic edge relief in the form of a fruit garland became the most extensive Rosenthal service. In 1939, there were already more than 170 different items, from bone dishes to knife banks and decorative corks. Even today, more than 70 different individual pieces are available. Some love stories are so beautiful that they are hard to believe. Like the one between Philipp Rosenthal and his wife Maria. These cups and saucers are the ideal English teacup set. They are perfect in detail and true to the original design that was Blue Italian by Spode. Yes, these are made in England, unlike most of the Blue Italian pieces, now made in China. I initially ordered just one teacup in this size directly from Spode to determine whether I would truly like them as. much as my Blue Italian set that I purchased years ago. I decided to order them once I received the initial cup, and saw that Wayfair offered a set of four cups and saucers in the 7 oz size for just about twice what I had paid for one cup and saucer from the manufacturer. Deal! Then I noticed that Wayfair also offered a set of four identical cups and saucers in the 10 oz size. I finally decided to return the 7 oz set of four in exchange for the 10 oz size since they were essentially the same price from Wayfair, and I imagined they would be more appreciated by my American friends for their larger size. I did keep the single 7 oz teacup to use myself, plus the set of four larger 10 oz teacups for sharing. Please see my photos for their comparison in size. In case you may be thinking of gifting these beauties, each set of one cup and saucer comes in its own Spode-labeled box. I have since purchased other pieces from this same line from Wayfair; all are made in England, and most arrived in perfect condition. The Butterfly Ginkgo collection celebrates the representation of flora as fauna. Michael's fascination with a particular type of ginkgo tree, the ginkgo Biloba, or "Butterfly ginkgo", which grows with a double leaf reminiscent of a butterfly's wings, gave rise to a fantasia image of the plant. Executed at the highest level of handcraftsmanship, each piece is rendered in solid brass with etched cocoon-shaped vessels. The pieces in the collection are a tour de force of Indian craft and capture the poetic spirit that is so deeply indicative of Michael's work. "The first time I saw this tree, it looked like it had been completely overtaken by butterflies...as if they would all take flight the moment I walked too close or made a noise. The idea that the leaves could evoke the beauty of butterflies was magical to me, like trees that can metamorphose from flora to fauna in the blink of an eye."
