Chris Dunker has photographed industrial culture for over two decades. His Father introduced photography to Chris at an early age. Chris attended Al Weber Workshops and classes at the community college where Chris’s Father taught photography. Dunker earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Art and Design with a photography concentration and a minor in Philosophy from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. In 1995 he completed a Masters of Fine Arts in photography from Utah State University. Chris grew up in China Lake, California which is in the isolated and remote high desert east of the Sierras. This austere and harsh environment is punctuated with mining outposts, rock art, and industrial-military structures, all influences of Dunker’s formative years. A strong interest in industrial music and performance groups like Survival Research Laboratories expanded his understanding of how industrial dynamics could be integrated into art forms and how an aesthetic could be derived from objects of utility. As an Assistant Professor of Photography at Utah State University, Dunker taught History of Photography and many other classes. Research in this field broadened his awareness of how photographers consider the role of industrial culture in relation to the human condition.

Artist Commentary: I find structures like the new addition to the the Milwaukee Art Museum so fascinating. The combination of harsh lines and solid rectangular shapes with the floor to ceiling glass atrium and metal facade is so…well, so damn cool. Buildings like this just beg to be photographed! The Artist, David Keochkerian, lives in Somme, France. He has a Ph.D. in human physiology and works in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation. He’s been practicing photography for 5 years now, although he fell into the cauldron when he was a child: his father is now a retired photographer. He grew up with the smell of chemicals and the shutter snap and purr of his roller transport print processor. “I like to capture the fleeting, the subtle, the beautiful, the rare, the spectacular, the staggering… to reveal how the daily and the ordinary can be filled with enthusiasm.” His work is very heterogeneous. He uses and associates many photographic techniques (DRI, HDR, panoramic, vertorama, long exposure), image renditions (color, B&W, infrared), and different themes (landscape, macro, light-painting, architecture, industry).

Artist Commentary: As a native New Yorker, my aesthetic vision has always been deeply rooted in the urban geometry of my surroundings. The “Patchwork City” series captures the energy and vitality of the ever-changing urban landscape. The works are composed of my own digitally manipulated architectural photographs which are pigment-printed on linen, cut apart, and re-assembled to create fabric collages.

Artist Commentary: Albert Einstein once said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” We devote a great part of our lives to gaining knowledge, while simultaneously neglecting our imagination . We were never taught how to use our imagination, and the repetition and banality of modern life gradually deactivates our imagination. However, imagination is still the only thing in us that is infinite. Our life, energy, and knowledge are limited; therefore we need to unlock our limitless imagination and set it in motion. How can we activate our imagination? Well, let’s imagine that everyone has a brand new car parked in their driveway but they don’t have the key. Although the cars can travel for thousands of miles, they can’t move an inch because there is no key. Not only do we all need a key, we need the right key that will activate our specific car. Either that or a bump key, a key that can open any lock. This revolutionary painting method is the bump key to everyone’s imagination. Now all can discover the key of their imagination and become an accomplished artist. Everyone from age 4 to 104 can master this painting process in 20 minutes. All the outsiders of the art community, can become insiders and enjoy the creative process. Painting with this method is not only pleasant, but also stimulates our imagination by creating images at the same synchronized speed with our imagination; We can become astronauts in our own head, constantly exploring new territories. The active imagination can transform all other facades of our lives, we can make the mundane more enjoyable if we apply our imagination to it. Imagine you can be, do, and have whatever you want. What would that be like? Dose our physical existence gives us that kind of freedom? In a world where everything and everyone deteriorates, nothing is worse than letting our infinite imaginations go to waste. The best way to stimulate our imagination is to synchronize the painting.
