This exquisite photograph captures the epitome of 1970s alpine sophistication, featuring Mrs Alfredo Cernadas reclining on a balcony in Gstaad during the height of the Swiss resort's golden age as the premier destination for the international jet set. Set against the majestic backdrop of the Swiss Alps, this intimate portrait embodies the refined leisure that defined Gstaad's reputation as "The Place," as Time magazine named it in the 1960s. By 1977, Gstaad had firmly established itself as the winter hangout for the international jet-set, where elegant socialites would retreat to luxurious chalets and exclusive private clubs like the Eagle Ski Club, which opened in 1957 and was funded by Charles Greville, 7th Earl of Warwick. Mrs. Cernadas, captured in a moment of serene contemplation, represents the cosmopolitan elite who transformed this Alpine village into a symbol of understated luxury and continental glamour, where the art of après-ski became as important as the skiing itself.
