In 2017, after years of sourcing artwork for countless interiors from outside sources, Hampton + Dunes creative director Michelle Mancuso decided to launch the brand’s own exclusive art collection that would perfectly complement their clients’ homes. Artist Tommy Kwak’s work explores the transience of landscapes and natural forms through ethereal large-format color photographs. His work has been shown in New York City and Iceland. He earned a BFA in graphic design from California College of the Arts in 2002 and completed photography courses at the International Center of Photography from 2006 to 2008. In 2010 and 2016, Tommy participated in the SIM Residency program in Reykjavik, Iceland, as well as the international arts festival, Villa Reykjavik. She was especially interested in Printmaking and liked silkscreen and etching because of the way it combined hand painting and digital looks. “Art is a part of my life and cannot live without. There is no right or wrong about art. It has the freedom to express whatever you feel. I paint what I see, not what it is supposed to look.” She works in mixed media and combines both digital and hand-painted works to create her unexpected looks.

Eric supposes that’s what he's doing today—walking and looking and trying to see the way that others have seen, as he attempts to see, un-see, and re-see: making all things both foreign and new. Making a small space in each photo he takes, room for the viewer, a place of both welcome and challenge. Every image is a poem. Every scene has a kind of structure. The capture of a place, for instance, involves decisions of narrative perspective (where to look, from what position), of cadence (beats, breaks, a line beneath the sky), of tone. And just like a poem, the effective image compresses emotional experience into a single, small expression.
