Artist Commentary: I was inspired to start this series of paintings when I became aware of the bizarre patterns that appear and instantly disappear instantly on the surface of relatively calm water. They are caused by the interplay of light, shade, wind and nearby objects ( boats, rocks, harbour wall etc.) to name but a few. The state of the tide is also relevant. Choppy water reminiscent of globs of green glass can change into silvery liquid metal when the tide turns. I take great delight in seeking out new material on my travels in the U.K, the Far East and the U.S. I prefer painting on a hard surface, rather than canvas, and usually make the wood panels myself to my own specifications. Three coats of acrylic gesso are applied before the oil painting commences.
