Crafted from natural grasses and ilala palm by the Tonga people of the Zambezi Valley, this hand-woven wall basket carries a bold two-tone geometric pattern. Dark star-and-zigzag motifs are dyed with natural plant pigments and woven against the pale undyed grass, the intricate Tonga weaving technique creating crisp contrast and depth. The Tonga have woven baskets for generations — first as winnowing and grain trays, and after the Kariba Dam reshaped their homeland in the 1950s, as a craft that now sustains entire communities. Each basket sits nearly flat against the wall; hang it with the loop on the back or set a nail through the open weave. Due to the handmade nature of these baskets, slight variations in color, size, and pattern may occur, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind.
