Hand-woven from the root of the makenge bush by Lozi artisans of western Zambia, this wedding basket is banded with rust-red and dark rings across a pale natural ground. The makenge wedding basket is a Barotseland marriage tradition — finely woven to mark a union, the precision of the work signaling the weaver's skill. It sits close to the wall; hang it with the loop on the back or set a nail through the open weave. Due to the handmade nature of this basket, slight variations in color, size, and pattern may occur, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind. We work directly with the small artisan communities who weave them — fair-trade terms and fair wages — from materials that are ethically and sustainably sourced.
