Commonly referred to as "Foo Dogs" in the West, these figures actually represent lions and were traditionally placed on either side of a building entrance to act as guardians. A mirrored pair, the male rests his paw on an orb to represent power and strength while the female rests her paw on a playful cub to symbolize nurture and care.
