Based on the Catalan vaults he created the Guastavino tile, a "Tile Arch System" patented in the United States in 1885 and used for constructing robust, self-supporting arches and architectural vaults using interlocking terracotta tiles and layers of mortar. Guastavino tile is found in some of New York's most prominent Beaux-Arts landmarks and in major buildings across the United States. It is used in a huge number of architecturally important and famous buildings with vaulted spaces. Guastavino was not the principal architect for most of the projects.

These are gorgeous, and I absolutely love them! They kind of took forever to arrive, but they all came together and all in one piece. There were no broken tiles, not even any cracks, chips, or scratches. I’m very pleased and quite impressed considering they came in packing peanuts (I hate packing peanuts, but they worked). The shade ranges and colors are beautiful. I love the white base that incorporates several shades of grey. The photos are one of each color and from the same box. I hope it shows the various colors and shades of each. They are simply stunning and elegant and I love the matte finish. I was afraid I wouldn’t like that, but I do! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I was very surprised to find out that these tiles are real marble and not that fake stuff you get at most stores. It's thick, heavy, has smooth clean cuts and a slightly rough back to help with adhesion. Unfortunately for me, some other projects came up and I had to put this one on hold temporarily, but I got the tiles at least arranged and rested 1 layer behind my stove to get an idea what it'll look like. Some will require cutting but i was already expecting that. I gotta say, I like the look even with 1 layer down and can't wait to see what it looks like fully installed! I was originally just going to do the oven backslash, but I feel like I'm gonna end up doing my entire kitchen wall with these.
