A late 19th-century Savonnerie carpet, the olive field with an overall light orange lozenge lattice with delicate flowers at the intersections within a laurel vinery frame. Doris Leslie Blau has always tried to bring the charm enclosed in antique rugs, Persian rugs closer to people, closer to you. We opened our galleries in multiple locations in order to let you experience the sheer beauty of antique, vintage Persian, and European Rugs, and carpets with your own eyes and hands.

This rug has a dense, soft pile and excellent quality to ensure that you will enjoy the look and feel of your rug for years to come.

A French Deco vintage rug with a graphic, linear and color-blocked design on a sand background. Art Deco owes its name to the first major exhibition of decorative arts to be held after the First World War: L’Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes held in Paris in 1925. The supreme elegance of the custom-made interiors at the event set an example for interior designers the world over. Inspired by these innovative aesthetic ideas, artists, designers, craftsmen, and manufacturers from across Europe and America produced a wide range of modern pioneering patterns that delivered a dramatic change of style to furnishings in general, and early 20th-century antique oriental rugs and carpets in particular. Decorative arts of this period, sometimes known as the Machine Age, are characterized by a streamlined appearance. European deco rugs and carpets are woven from the mid-1920s through the 1930s reflecting this style. Art Deco is a style of visual arts, architecture, and design that first appeared in France just before World War I. The Art Deco movement led to a fast evolution of the rug and textile design, among other art forms. Rug design evolved from traditional floral and highly ornamental to a style of angular elegance with geometric, abstract, and modern figurative motifs. The design is frequently spare, geometric, and architectural. The rugs created during this period remain elegant and refined to this day.

Handmade in wool and originating circa 1920-1930, this 2x3 rug is a rare and exciting new curation in Rug & Kilim’s collection of antique hooked rugs. On the Design: Admirers of the craft will appreciate this piece as one of the most beautiful rugs we’ve curated from this style, with an equally gorgeous and unique floral medallion and geometric design for this craft. Connoisseurs will appreciate this among some of the richest, most collectible works of folk art and among the earliest forms of American folk art in our field—an exemplar of folksy charm and art as much as an accent rug, from a distinguished weaving tradition of Americana with vast design applications today. Condition: This antique hooked rug further enjoys good condition for its age and origin—a rare and collectible piece of history for both designer and connoisseur alike. Buyers and decorators will note that many pieces in this collection are currently on a wooden frame, and can be sold as is for wall-hanging projects or removed for flooring projects upon request.

An early 20th century Samarkand (Khotan) carpet, the dark brownfield with a pomegranate trellis in sand overall within a series of sand geometric and floral device borders. Although generally vintage rugs from all places in the world share certain common features and are rather distinguishable from antique carpets, they differ quite significantly from one another depending on the exact place of their origin. While a Persian antique rug from Tabriz may be easily confused with a similar creation coming from a different weaving center, or even a different country, like Turkey, vintage rugs, especially those from the first half of the 20th century, are much more diverse in terms of style and applied patterns. Inspired by new trends back then yet still deeply rooted in tradition, and sometimes folklore, of a given country, vintage carpets exhibit an immense array of designs and aesthetics characteristic to the nations that produced them. We would like to present some major categories of vintage Samarkand kilim rug designs and show which way of thinking and historical background influenced particular weaving styles.

European Deco rugs came at the beginning of the 20th century on the wave of rapid changes that brought a completely new perspective on design and interior decorating. This vintage French Art Deco rug is quite a unique example of its times’ aesthetics. The central medallion occupying the field is relatively decorative and has delicate floral overtones which may suggest Art Nouveau influences. It is presented against the chain-like stripes running vertically through the face of the antique rug and enclosed within a simple single border. Not too bold but not too timid either, this composition can help to make a statement in a wide variety of interior arrangements. This charming vintage rug can boast of firm structure and durability that allowed it to survive until the present with no signs of wear. It is hand-made of wool with the knots tight yet rather pronounced. If well-maintained, the piece can survive many years in excellent condition, pleasing the eyes and feet of its owners.
