The Fortune Fish Collection

The world is connected in a myriad of intricate ways by the formless dao - a way of existing in the world…like an emotion or a conscious perception. Fish come from oceans, rivers, and ponds to meet upon this hulu gourd. In pursuit of the heart’s dao, people come together and relationships are formed. In China, this is called yuan, a word akin to fate or destiny. Here two fish meet and look toward the same future, in harmony with each other and the times. From the front, the fish appear in delicate relief. From the back, the high-polish and engraved surface implies the presence of deep waters. Front and back together cleverly the internal and external qualities of existence and non-existence.

In Chinese the words comprising “goldfish,” jingyu, are homonyms with the words for “gold” and “jade.” The fish has traditionally always been seen as symbolic of prosperity and good fortune. Coming from the collection “Through Sky and Sea I Roam,” “Grand Fulfillment” portrays five goldfish converging at a central focal point, out from which a blossom-like fanning pattern of swirling tails bloom. Representing the success and attainment of all aspirations as they unite. This symbolic artwork glows warmly with depth and positivity.

The circular polished center is the focal point of the design. It is like the surface of a clear pool, and also like a magnifying glass that shows two fish’s movements. It seems two fish are swimming together leisurely, and enjoying their respective joy at the same time. From the front view, it’s when you dive into the water and watch fish swim and see everything clearly from the seafloor- the Taihu rock stands up tall, fish swims in between; on the other hand, the polished surface recreates an experience of viewing from atop of the water. These two perspectives were combined into one design, making the artwork more interesting to view. In a nutshell, when appreciating things from different perspectives, we may be able to release ourselves from boundaries or physical limits and reach intellectual freedom. Joyful harmony a majestic mountain, a limpid pool, the heart is limitless. Like a shadow to the form, the sun and moon mirror each other in joyful harmony.

The art piece represents harmony and the joy of life. Two fish dance playfully, cheeks puffed and tails blending into the flow of the life and water around them. It's an artwork that speaks of simple pleasures, harmony, and joie de vivre. In designing the piece, "master" artist Loretta H. Yang would puff her own cheeks and feign swimming, making the team of artists laugh along with the art piece.

The power of the whale rising from the waves into the sunlight is captured in this sculpture. As the whale rises, it brings with it energy from the depths of the ocean and its very soul, creating a sum greater than its parts. Extending from sea to sky, liuli as a medium is boundless which makes it ideal for capturing the vastness of the world we live in. Immense power amplified, rippling outward into every heart. This piece is suitable for sending appreciation of strength, perseverance, and resilience.

Rendered in liuli crystal, leaves and fish become stars of the show, complementing each other. Lotus leaves symbolize harmony, goldfish means abundance and good luck, this design creates an elegant movement of pure beauty in life. Two fish are presented in negative carving, but the polished surface on lotus leaves is used to show their movement and expression in the water. The process of sculpting is particularly complicated. The sculpture of the fish and the positioning need to be done prior to the prototype, then join two fish sculptures on the prototype with reiteration on the details of the junction being smooth and organic.
